Project Type – Public
Location – London
Main Contractor – Murray and Willis
As part of a major refurbishment of Chelsea Theatre, Harlow Glass installed feature curtain walling, windows and doors to the building exterior. The project also included external flat glazed rooflights. Internally fire rated glass screens and glazed office partitions were installed.
The key feature of the project was a new bar and terrace area to the first floor of the building. The architects wanted to create a “lightbox” to the top of the building to highlight the building in its context. To help hit project budgets a cap fixed curtain walling system was utilised with double glazed units. To the head of the frame obscured glazing was used to hide the roof build-up behind. Double commercial doors provide access to the new external terrace. Within the terrace floor a new walk-on glass rooflight provides natural daylight to the cafe below. To the roof of the bar three further rooflights maximise light in the bar area.
Around the ground and first floors of the building new aluminium windows and doors were installed. The doors included an automated set of pivot doors to the main entrance as well as glazed emergency exit doors. The windows were installed to enhance the natural ventilation in the spaces in the building. They also included a bi-folding window to the cafe area to connect the new cafe space with the outside area.
Internally a bespoke fire rated glass screen was installed to allow views through to the new feature staircase to the first floor. New glass office partitions were also installed to the administration offices. All the internal glazing provides a light and open space to work and socialise.
