Products – Frameless Glass Balustrades, Glass Balustrading
Project Type – Commercial
Location – London
Main Contractor – Faithdean
As part of works to construct a new roof terrace Harlow Glass has installed frameless glass balustrades helping to capture views of St Paul’s Cathedral in London. The project required close collaboration with the main contractor and steel sub-contractor. The designed required a completely frameless effect with no visible support for the glazing.
To achieve this Harlow Glass installed a continuous structural aluminium base shoe around the perimeter of the terrace. This was installed onto a secondary steel structure fixing the system to the existing roof. The installation allowed the base shoe and glass to be installed safely from the terrace without moving outside of the building parapet. A dry glaze system ensures that should a panel fail for any reason in the future replacement can be swift with minimal disruption.
To aid with the speed of installation panels were prefabricated with dimensions worked in Autocad from co-ordinated drawings. This allowed the installation to take place immediately following the installation of the base shoe. This provided two benefits to the main contractor that a new safe barrier was installed quickly to the terrace, while also speeding up the overall installation. The new decking was then installed up to the glass panels to complete the frameless appearance.
